Family Resources

  • Washington University Resources for Families. from the Office of Diversity Initiatives.
  • The AWN Family Resource Handbook (4th Edition) udpated in July 2003 has information on child care, camps, elder care, and more.
  • The Newman Center (935-9191, ask for Kathy Moody, ext 203) maintains a list of interested students and other members of the Catholic Student Center community who are interested in babysitting.The Arts & Sciences Career Center maintains a job binder (with a section specifically on childcare) in which a faculty or staff member who is looking for a part-time babysitter can advertise "openings." Please encourage students whom you know are looking for babysitting jobs to go to this binder. If a student calls you based on your posting in the binder, it is up to you to check references and the background of the student.

  • If you are looking for a steady in-home caregiver, you might try the International Center, in South Grand. They have employment counselors who work with the newly-emigrated people, and they do a lot of training, screening, and so on (they help those interested in doing childcare get Red Cross lifesaving certification, for instance).
  • Child Day Care Association (CDCA), the University's referral service for child and elder care. Their phone number is (314) 531-1412 or (800) 467-2322 outside of the metro area. Ask for the referral departhment and a speciliast will prepare "a customized list of resources that meet your needs."

Community Resources

  • The Washington University Family Network provides parent-to-parent resources for the community. WUFN’s purpose is to allow members of the Washington University community to give and receive reliable, current, local information quickly.
  • The St. Louis Regional Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (STLR HERC) has recently launched a free search engine for job seekers interested in finding employment at colleges, universities and research-based institutions in Missouri and Southern Illinois. The website provides resources for dual career families and regional resources for local government, recreation, travel, culture, schools and worship.
